ABSTRACT

In 2021, the airline industry was affected by COVID-19, and many airlines suffered losses. The main reason for the loss were the decline in revenue and the surge in costs. Therefore, in terms of creating the competitive advantage of airlines, "price war" is no longer applicable, and improving service quality has become an effective means. Customer satisfaction is the most effective indicator to measure service quality. In this study, a satisfaction evaluation system is established based on structural equation model and customer satisfaction importance matrix. Then, a questionnaire is designed to analyze the influence of different factors on customer satisfaction. The research finds that brand image and perceived quality have a great impact on customer satisfaction. In addition, some suggestions for airlines to improve customer satisfaction are given. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

The European Air Transportation Network was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in an unprecedented loss of flight connections. Utilizing a combination of graph representation learning and time series analysis, this paper studies the evolution of both the global connectivity as well as the structure of the European Air Transportation Network from January 2020 to December 2022. Specifically, it finds strong differences in recovery rates for flights across six different market segments. In terms of network structure, the study finds that structural roles that are present in the pre-covid network have seen a loss in performance over the course of the pandemic, but have recovered to pre-covid levels. Using regional changes in structural roles, this study identifies Italy as the region with the strongest increase and the United Kingdom as the region with the strongest decrease in structural role, finding substantial differences in recovery rates per market segment. Lastly, this study pays special attention on the effect of the Russia-Ukrainian war on the European Air Transportation Network. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Despite an increased emphasis on improvement in airline service quality concerning consumer behavior, such as passenger repurchasing as a result of their behavioral intention over the last several decades, there is still much less concern with the nature of airline service quality than should exist in the so-called "logistics service quality” and less concern with examining the specific behavioral intention preceding repurchasing behavior together with the theory of planned behavior. As such, this study aims to explore these issues, along with the psychological factors of the theory of planned behavior, that can lead to repurchasing behavior via word-of-mouth intention (WOMI). With an online survey of 383 respondents experienced with flying, the results reveal that the logistics service quality and each determinant in the theory positively influence a passenger's repurchasing behavior through WOMI. Accordingly, service marketers can implement service design and apply integrated marketing communication by learning from repurchasing behavior that was formed by the given factors to retain their existing customers. Moreover, this study is the first to empirically and explicitly validate dimensions of airline services through the lens of logistics that are deemed fit with the nature of the airlines. It advances the understanding of theory approaching and connects what has hampered its advancement in a body of knowledge, simultaneously in a context of airline context where it should not be relegated to transportation and consumer and service orientation.

ABSTRACT

This study outlines the stress factors and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stress variables among aviation workers, which includes airline employees, flight crews, pilots, maintenance crews, air traffic controllers, airport or ground workers, engineers, training personnel, and other aviation-related personnel. A review was done on 37 research papers using systematic literature review (SLR) and discovered nine stress factors among aviation workers which are working hours, workloads, internal factors, ergonomic issues, job uncertainty, job demands, organizational issues, team conflict, and the COVID-19 itself. The findings of this study could provide insights to employers in the aviation industry for mitigation actions that could help to successfully reduce and eliminate stress factors in the workplace. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

This work is an analysis of the implications of the potential new regulatory policies being recently proposed in the European Union, in particular the mandatory blending of SAF (on top of the already existing CORSIA or ETS), to address aviation emissions from a technical, operational and economic perspective. As a continuation of previous work from the Department of Aerospace Systems, Air Transport and Airports from the ETSIAE (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), the air traffic structure of the European Union in 2019 has been analysed based on publicly available data from EUROCONTROL and EUROSTAT. The output has been used as the reference scenario for the implementation of the mandatory blending of SAF, expected to take over at the beginning of 2025, since it is expected that by then, air traffic will reach the pre-COVID levels. The results show that all the policy options considered so far have uneven impact among the different stakeholders and that before deciding going forward with any of the presented options, extra work needs to be done to overcome the different challenges that would potentially arise. © 2022 ICAS. ABSTRACT

PurposeThe supply chain (SC) encompasses all actions related to meeting customer requests and transferring materials upstream to meet those demands. Organisations must operate towards increasing SC efficiency and effectiveness to meet SC objectives. Although most businesses expected the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to severely negatively impact their SCs, they did not know how to model disruptions or their effects on performance in the event of a pandemic, leading to delayed responses, an incomplete understanding of the pandemic's effects and late deployment of recovery measures. Therefore, this study aims to consider the impact of implementing Bayesian network (BN) modelling to measure SC performance in the airline catering context.Design/methodology/approachThis study presents a method for modelling and quantifying SC performance assessment for airline catering. In the COVID-19 context, the researchers proposed a BN model to measure SC performance and risk events and quantify the consequences of pandemic disruptions.FindingsThe study simulates and measures the impact of different triggers on SC performance and business continuity using forward and backward propagation analysis, among other BN features, enabling us to combine various SC perspectives and explicitly account for pandemic scenarios.Originality/valueThis study's findings offer a fresh theoretical perspective on the use of BNs in pandemic SC disruption modelling. The findings can be used as a decision-making tool to predict and better understand how pandemics affect SC performance.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the effect of security oversight on air cargo price and demand. We exploit variations in security oversight instituted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). We estimate a simultaneous equation model using proprietary operations data from a major airline in South Korea over the period 2009–2013. This study explores the shipping-charge behavior of a service provider through a modeling approach that considers air cargo security. Our findings show that security oversight increases air cargo demand, controlling for the effect of price. Improving security measures increases the air cargo price, but the magnitude of this increase is small. Our results should help policymakers gauge the benefit of improved security and help airlines design an effective model to determine future air cargo shipping charges under high uncertainty to mitigate short- and long-term financial risks.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic increased the risk of financial distress, bankruptcy, or both, in the airline industry. Whether airlines can survive or not during and/or after the pandemic is closely related to their decisions and actions which will enable their success by increasing their resilience. In crisis periods such as COVID-19, the decisions taken by airlines are strategically important for achieving sustainable success. Thus, it is critical to understand which factors are more important for airlines to shape their actions and make correct decisions. This paper investigates the sustainable success factors on which airlines should focus to provide resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It provides a robust model using the interval type-2 fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IT2FAHP) and interval type-2 fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (IT2FDEMATEL) to identify and rank success factors. The findings indicate that financial and operational factors are extremely important to ensure resilience for airlines. In addition, the results of the study reveal that operational factors and information sharing factors have an impact on financial factors and customer satisfaction. © National Academy of Sciences: Transportation Research Board 2021.

ABSTRACT

Movement restrictions implementation due the COVID-19 pandemic affected people's mobility and and transportation sectors globally. Tourism, retail, transportation, and hospitality also suffered significant consequences that indirectly impacted a country's economic stability. Hence, this paper presents the Malaysian experience with the effects of the pandemic on transportation services and travel behaviour. Online sources, secondary data and a questionnaire survey were employed to collect the relevant data. These data were further analysed and presented in this paper. In general, transportation sectors involving air, rail and public bus showed decreased demand and services. A severe drop in services was observed in air transportation which is more than 97%. Most people prefer not to use public transportation to avoid the risk of COVID-19 infection. Noticeable changes in travel behaviour and mode preference during and pre-pandemic are observed, particularly on trips related to work/school. Key pandemic factors concerning transportation were fear of infection and social distance. Hence, most people prefer to use a private vehicle. The changes in transportation service and travel behaviour result in severe losses in the transportation sector in Malaysia.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to explore the evolving nature of the work of cabin crew in a Scandinavian carrier in three eras, drawing on theories of gender and emotional labour.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on ethnographic data from fieldwork, interviews and documents.FindingsFrom being a feminized and temporary occupation for young, upper- and middle-class women in the 1970s, the occupation became a full-time job and with greater diversity of cabin crew. Today there are signs of the job becoming a precarious and temporary one of demanding and devalorized work in a polarized and class-divided labour market. Changing circumstances impact on the emotional labour requirement and terms and conditions at work.Research limitations/implicationsA limitation is that the research design was not initially longitudinal in the sense that the author does not have exactly the same kind of data from each era. The author has, however, been involved in this field for two decades, used multiple methods and interacted with different stakeholders and drew on a unique data material.Practical implicationsThe development in aviation is contributing to new discriminatory practices, driving employee conditions downwards and changing the job demands. This development will have practical consequences for the lives and families of cabin crew.Social implicationsThe analysis illustrates how work ‘constructs' workers and contributes in creating jobs that are not sustainable for the employees. Intensification of work, insecurity and tougher working conditions also challenge key features in the Nordic model such as proper pay, decent work and a life-long employment. Much indicates that the profession is again becoming a temporary one of demanding work with poor working conditions in a polarized and class-divided labour market.Originality/valueThe research contributes to the literature on emotional labour, gender and the evolving nature of the work of cabin crew. The unique data material, the longitudinal aspect of the research and the focus on a single network carrier are good in charting changes over time.

ABSTRACT

For the spread COVID-19 between countries through air transportation, the influencing factors are analyzed, a system dynamics model which passes the validity test is established. Then, three key indicators, Basic Reproduction Rate, Initial Infection Individuals and Transfer Rate, are selected as independent variables to analyze the system changes through computer simulation. Based on the analysis, the infectivity of COVID-19 and the number of people transferred by air transportation are important factors affecting the import of epidemics for non-epidemic countries, and the sooner or later control of infectious diseases by epidemic countries has little effect on non-epidemic countries.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a formal model to assess the introduction of hydrogen technology in the air transport sector when the initial market is uncovered, a situation relevant to the current COVID-19 crisis. The "flight shame” movement causes some passengers to leave the market while allowing for some willingness-to-pay for cleaner technologies. Starting from a horizontally differentiated duopoly between airlines with old technology and an uncovered market, the introduction of hydrogen technology provides the opportunity for vertical differentiation in line with the increased environmental consciousness of passengers. The principal methodological novelties start from an uncovered market and combine horizontal and vertical differentiation. The main results are the airlines' optimal strategy sets and the adoption strategy dynamics with an increased valuation of quality by passengers. We justify a regulator's intervention and draw several potential policy implications from this dynamic, such as a minimum subsidy level and educational advertising. © 2022

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we examine for the first time in the literature the implications of energy policy alternatives for Germany considering the aftermath of coronavirus as well as Electricity and Gas energy supply shortages. Whilst several policy options are open to the government, the choice of investment in renewable energy generation versus disinvestment in non-renewable energy such as coal energy generation provides divergent impacts in the long term. We utilize data from British Petroleum and the World Bank Development Indicator database for Germany covering 1981 to 2020 to explore a Carbon function by applying a battery of Autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), dynamic ARDL and Kernel-Based Regularized Least squares approaches. The particular policy tested is the pledge by Germany to decrease emissions by ∼100% in 2050, and this was integrated through the estimation of dynamic ARDL estimation. The simulation result shows that a +61% shock in renewable energy production decreases carbon emissions unlike coal energy production which increases carbon emissions in the beginning but the carbon emissions decrease thereafter. The findings highlight the inevitability of cutting down on coal production, and recommends energy investment alternatives. Hence, Germany's energy policy should contemplate more thoroughly on these factors. © 2023 The Author(s)

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has recently led to a global alarm due to its fatal nature from the spread of the coronavirus. Thailand is currently aware of this unprecedented time and the Thai cabinet has imposed a state of emergency to prevent the spread of this virus. The tourism and hospitality sectors have been devastated by the coronavirus. Therefore, the purpose of this study aims to examine the impact on tourism and hospitality including airline and hotel sectors. The study used adopt secondary data from various sources both academic and practitioner as critical discourse analysis for textual analysis and synthesis. Data were obtained from fifty articles discussed in this paper. The paper indicates the impact of the pandemic on tourism, airline and hotel sectors. Moreover, results are also highlighted negative impact on Thailand tourism and hospitality industry from the crisis by proven the decreased number of international tourist arrival. The implementation of social protection, and government aid policy to support people affected by the pandemic is also are presented in the result of this study. In conclusion and implication, this research/paper will further help the industries to take initiative strategies and best policies to be implemented in the future to combat the disease. Future research is also recommended in this study.

ABSTRACT

Background: Air travel restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) impacted air travel to and from and within South Africa significantly. The duration of the pandemic was more protracted than initially expected as new variants of the pandemic (in ‘waves') resulted in additional restrictions. Objectives: To determine the nature of COVID-19-related air travel restrictions, their impact on annual passenger demand, the number of flights operated (supply of services), the related average passenger loads carried as well as on tourism indicators of the direct contribution of travel and tourism, the total contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment. Method: The study identifies the number of passengers carried and flights operated and calculates the average passenger load per flight and trends. The impact on tourism indicators is based on the unit values of metrics published by the World Travel and Tourism Council for the 2019 calendar year, adapted for the reduction in passengers in the first and second years following the COVID-19 lockdown. Results: Significant decreases in the annual number of passengers carried, flights operated (in the three geographic areas), and their impact on tourism and employment indicators were identified. Conclusion: The decline in passengers exceeded the decrease in flights operated, which resulted in a decline in the average load of passengers carried per flight. The significance of COVID-19 restrictions on tourism indicators and employment was also calculated. Contribution: The study identifies the impact of COVID-19 air travel restrictions on both air transport and tourism indicators for South Africa.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis research adopts the conservation of resources (COR) theory to examine the effects of trust in organizations and trait mindfulness on optimism and perceived stress of flight attendants in Thailand during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachOnline survey data were collected from 234 flight attendants who work for five low-cost airlines based in Thailand. The data were analyzed by using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).FindingsThe results show that trust in an organization and trait mindfulness are negatively associated with the perceived stress of flight attendants. Their associations are also partially mediated by optimism. Moreover, the moderating effect analysis reveals that trait mindfulness intensifies the positive association between trust in organizations and optimism.Originality/valueThe evidence from this research broadens COR theory by showing that different aspects of resources can be combined to strengthen the ability of individuals to gain more resources to lessen stress.

ABSTRACT

Recent Coronavirus pandemic has prompted many regulations which are affecting the stock market. Especially because of lockdown policies across the world, the airlines industry is suffering. We analyse the stock price movements of three major airlines companies using a new approach which leverages a measure of internet concern on different topics. In this approach, Twitter data and Google Trends are used to create a set of predictors which then leads to an appropriately modified GARCH model. In the analysis, first we show that the ongoing pandemic has an unprecedented severe effect. Then, the proposed model is used to analyse and forecast stock price volatility of the airlines companies. The findings establish that our approach can successfully use the effects of internet concern for different topics on the movement of stock price index and provide good forecasting accuracy. Model confidence set (MCS) procedure further shows that the short‐term volatility forecasts are more accurate for this method than other candidate models. Thus, it can be used to understand the stock market during a pandemic in a better way. Further, the proposed approach is attractive and flexible, and can be extended to other related problems as well.

ABSTRACT

Aviation is undeniably one of the fastest-growing industries worldwide (ICAO, 2022). Analysts predict that despite a brief―yet considerable―pause, brought on by COVID-19 (Gao, 2022;IATA, 2022), global aviation traffic is increasing and will possibly threefold in the next 30 years (Gössling & Humpe, 2020;ICAO, 2023). Furthermore, this tremendous increase in air travel will also trigger a considerable need for personnel and will unavoidably lead to a significant shortage of pilots which has been forecasted by many sources in the past (Bennett & Vijaygopal, 2021;Champ, 2022;Meredith, 2019;Moehle & Clauss, 2015;Rice et al., 2014). Specifically, trends showed that the world will be lacking approximately 800,000 pilots by the year 2037 (Caraway, 2020). Put another way, the demand for airline pilots is going to outweigh the supply by far. ABSTRACT

Air transport is the primary module of civil aviation and because of its nature, air transport has been simultaneously affected by Pandemics and crises. The influence of COVID-19 was more devastating than the other Pandemics and crises due to its global effect. This effect has continued a long period that still this effect exists now with a slight trend. The aim of this study is to analyse the selected variables that shows the past and future trend of air transportation related to operational and financial status. These variables are the primary ones that can define the countries' general status in air transport. The forecasting results are examined by 9-months forecasting with Vector Error Correction Model. It is forecasted that slightly decreasing trend will proceed in the following 9-months for passenger transportation due to fall and winter seasons. It is forecasted that slightly upward trend will proceed in the following 3-months and slightly decreased in the other 6-months for cargo transportation due to potential economic crisis in 2023. The originality of this paper is the first research related to analyse passenger and freight transportation together with the operational and financial parameters that defined in the sample of data and methodology sections. © 2023 Journal of Cellular & Molecular Anesthesia.
